Measure the room and the opening

Record the room area and describe any features that affect its cooling needs, rather than beginning with the largest capacity available. ENERGY STAR provides room-sizing guidance and explains that correct sizing matters. Consult that guidance and the manufacturer’s requirements for the particular space.

Measure the usable window opening separately. Note its type, available width and height, and anything that limits installation. A model described as suitable for a small room can still be incompatible with the window. Keep a sketch or photographs for your own reference when reviewing installation instructions.

Resolve the building questions early

Ask the owner or manager what installation arrangement is permitted, who performs it and whether an approved support or kit is required. Confirm any restrictions before buying. This is a practical coordination step, not a statement about a particular lease or local law.

Use the model’s specified support, clearances and electrical supply. Do not assume an adapter, improvised bracket or extension lead can make an unsuitable purchase work. If the window is also needed for access or an exit, have that conflict resolved through the appropriate building guidance.

Compare the complete amount you must spend

Make one row per candidate with these entries:

  • Exact model and cooling capacity.
  • Confirmed opening and installation compatibility.
  • Appliance price, delivery and required accessories.
  • Approved installation cost.
  • Annual energy figure and the assumptions behind it.
  • Return conditions if the confirmed fit is wrong.

As an invented example, a $280 unit needing $70 of materials and installation costs $350 to put into service. A $320 option needing $20 costs $340. Sticker price alone would rank them in the opposite order.

Keep the shortlist small and explainable

Compare only suitable candidates on the same energy basis. Do not turn a capacity label into a measured wattage or mix portable AC ratings with window-unit metrics. Note sound information with its test conditions instead of ranking unrelated decibel claims.

Before ordering, revisit the model number, room requirement and total budget together. Save the relevant manual and the installation agreement.
