Create a shortlist that actually fits
Record the exact model numbers. Check the room requirements, window or exhaust arrangement, footprint, clearances and electrical supply. Eliminate unsuitable options before comparing their prices.
Next record what each price includes. A supplied window kit, an optional support bracket or a delivery charge can change the amount you really need to spend.
Compare like with like
Use the same type of rating on both sides of the sheet. For portable ACs, distinguish the SACC figure from ASHRAE capacity. Record energy figures with their units and the conditions or period they describe.
A claim that a unit is “up to” a certain percentage more efficient is not enough to calculate your bill. Ask what the comparison is against and look for model-specific information.
Add up one worked example
Suppose option A costs $250 and averages 800 watts. Option B costs $400 and averages 500 watts. Both run eight hours daily, 30 days per month and four months per year at $0.18/kWh.

B costs $150 more upfront but saves $51.84 per year in this scenario. The energy-only break-even is about 2.89 years. Over three years, B is only $5.52 cheaper. A small change in actual use could reverse such a close result.
Keep comfort and evidence visible
Add rows for sound, controls, cleaning access, warranty terms and return conditions. If sound data uses different distances or modes, mark it as not directly comparable rather than inventing a ranking.
The FTC explains that the annual operating cost on an EnergyGuide label is an estimate, not a personalized bill. Use the comparison to identify what you still need to know. When the cost difference is tiny, fit, usability and reliable evidence may be more useful deciding factors.
