Compare simple payback with your expected ownership period, recognizing that repairs and lifespan are uncertain. A renter who expects to move soon may value portability differently from a long-term owner. This simple method also omits financing, changing tariffs and the time value of money. Use it to screen options and understand assumptions, then keep the broader purchase decision grounded in fit, reliability and the total cost you can actually support.
