The useful answerRemoval capacity describes moisture removal under test conditions. Integrated energy factor describes removal per unit of energy. The collection tank’s volume is a separate convenience feature.

Keep the units beside the rating

ENERGY STAR describes portable dehumidifier capacity in pints per 24 hours and integrated energy factor, or IEF, in liters removed per kilowatt-hour. A larger tank does not automatically mean greater removal capacity or better efficiency.

When making a shortlist, write these three quantities in separate columns: rated removal capacity, IEF and tank volume or drainage arrangement. Check that the ratings use a comparable test basis. Avoid comparing an old capacity claim with a newer one without understanding the test conditions behind them.

Use the efficiency number as a ratio

For arithmetic only, imagine two operating scenarios that remove the same ten liters of water. If one removes two liters per kWh, it would use 10 ÷ 2 = 5 kWh. At 2.5 liters per kWh, the other would use 4 kWh.

At $0.18/kWh, the costs would be $0.90 and $0.72, a difference of $0.18 for that quantity of water. These are invented ratios used to explain units, not measurements or predictions obtained from two real IEF labels. A standardized IEF should not be assumed to persist unchanged in your room.

Check the room conditions and water handling

ENERGY STAR’s guidance links the required capacity to the space and its moisture conditions, and notes operating-temperature considerations. A rating does not establish performance under every temperature and humidity combination.

Also consider how the collected water is managed. If a tank fills and the appliance stops, the practical schedule may differ from the hours you hoped it would run. For a drain arrangement, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and keep water routing safely separated from electrical connections. Do not improvise a setup solely to avoid emptying the tank.

Compare an outcome and its cost together

Record the room conditions, setting, elapsed time and energy used during a representative period. Note interruptions for tank emptying or other reasons. Track whether the appliance achieved the intended room condition rather than rewarding the lowest energy number regardless of the outcome.

If moisture comes from a leak or a building problem, record and report that problem; a running-cost calculation does not diagnose or repair it. Suitability, convenience and energy are connected parts of the decision, but they are not interchangeable ratings.
