Define the room problem
Record whether the room is hot, humid or both. Use a humidity gauge and note outdoor conditions. EPA guidance emphasizes managing excess moisture; persistent dampness or leaks need their underlying cause addressed rather than simply longer appliance operation.
LG’s portable AC listing includes distinct cool, dry and fan modes. Consult your own model’s instructions for dry-mode behavior, allowed controls and drainage. A marketing label does not specify the moisture-removal rate under your room conditions.
Compare complete observation periods
For each suitable option, record starting and ending temperature, relative humidity, elapsed time and total kWh. Keep doors, windows and laundry activity consistent. If available, note collected water, but do not assume that condensate collection methods on different appliances are directly comparable.
A trial ending much colder or at a different humidity is not an equal-result efficiency comparison. Report both outcomes instead of declaring a winner solely from electricity use.
Turn kWh into an honest cost
Suppose one hypothetical routine consumes 2.00 kWh and another 1.40 kWh. At $0.18/kWh, they cost $0.36 and about $0.25. The difference is about 11 cents for those observation periods.
If the second routine leaves the room too damp, that difference is not a saving for an equivalent result. Include any additional operation needed, and note changes to heating or cooling that your estimate excludes.
Choose equipment around the actual need
Check capacity information, drainage arrangements, sound and the required installation before considering a new appliance. A renter should also distinguish ordinary seasonal humidity from a building maintenance problem. Save a short log for persistent issues. Use the cost comparison to budget an appropriate solution, not to justify operating outside the manual or accepting unsuitable indoor conditions just because one mode uses fewer watts.
