Use the settings you watch with

Screen size alone cannot provide a reliable operating cost. Find the exact model’s energy information and identify the picture mode used in any measurement. A bright showroom mode and the setting you prefer at home may be different.

ENERGY STAR discusses automatic brightness control and energy-related picture settings. Check the controls available on your own model and choose a picture that remains comfortable to view. Do not assume that a comparison made in one picture mode describes every mode the television offers.

Calculate the viewing period

In a hypothetical example, an 80 W average draw for four hours daily over 30 days uses 0.08 × 4 × 30 = 9.6 kWh. At $0.18/kWh, that costs $1.73 after rounding.

For six hours daily on the same assumptions, consumption becomes 14.4 kWh and cost $2.59. If a different setting averages 120 W for four hours, the result is also 14.4 kWh. Both power and time can change the cost, so note which input changed before drawing a conclusion.

Add the equipment outside the screen

A soundbar, streaming box or game console may draw electricity separately. If a hypothetical accessory averages 20 W for the same four-hour schedule, it adds 2.4 kWh, or $0.43 per month. That is not included in the television’s own watt figure.

Keep equipment with a different schedule on a separate line. A box left running between viewing sessions needs an estimate for those periods too. Conversely, if a compatible meter measures the entire setup together, adding all its components again would double-count their consumption.

Make a proportionate decision

If two suitable picture settings differ by an average 10 W for four daily hours, the monthly difference is 1.2 kWh, or about $0.22 at the example tariff. That can inform a preference, but it is a different scale of decision from replacing a working television.

Check the annual difference before treating an efficiency claim as a reason to buy. Include the purchase premium and the viewing experience you need. For unused equipment, investigate its actual standby behavior using the standby cost guide, while preserving functions that need to stay available.
