Start with the operating setting
The wattage on a heater is an electrical input, not a fixed monthly cost. Your result depends on which setting is used, how long it draws that power and your electricity rate. A lower setting and a thermostat-controlled mode need their own assumptions.
For a constant-draw scenario, divide watts by 1,000 and multiply by operating hours. A 1,500 W heater draws 1.5 kW in this model. One hour uses 1.5 kWh. At an illustrative $0.18/kWh, the cost is $0.27. The calculation says nothing about whether that heater is suitable for a particular room.
Build a schedule you can afford

These rows assume uninterrupted draw during the selected hours. If the thermostat switches the element off part of the time, actual energy can be lower. Do not select a cycling percentage simply because it produces a preferred budget; use documented consumption or keep it clearly hypothetical.
Keep the safety conditions in the calculation
The CPSC advises keeping portable heaters at least three feet from combustible materials, plugging electric heaters directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord or power strip, and switching them off when sleeping. Follow the exact product manual and check for recalls.
Do not add a plug-in meter, timer or other intermediary that conflicts with those instructions. An assumed overnight schedule is not a recommendation to operate a heater while asleep. Stop using damaged equipment and obtain appropriate help with electrical problems.
Compare the whole heating decision
A room heater adds electricity use; it only reduces another heating cost if that other system’s consumption actually falls. If building heat is included in rent, running an additional electric heater may simply increase your own bill.
Record which room needs help and when. In a rental, report persistent heating problems to the owner or manager. Use the running cost calculator to explore a suitable schedule, but keep comfort, installation requirements and any existing heating charges alongside the answer.
