Choose the measurement job
Write down the appliance, the observation period and the decision you hope to make. Measuring a refrigerator over several days is different from measuring a tiny idle charger. A device suitable for one job may lack the rating or resolution for another.
Check both the monitor and appliance instructions for permitted use. Do not assume a smart plug is appropriate for a heater, AC, motor load or fixed appliance merely because its headline amp rating looks large.
Check what is recorded and retained
Look for cumulative kWh, the minimum resolvable load, accuracy information and whether records remain available without an internet service. Confirm whether the displayed “cost” uses a rate you can set and whether it models your tariff correctly.
A basic flat-rate display will not necessarily calculate tiers, peak periods or fixed charges. Treat its dollar figure as an estimate unless you have verified the relevant assumptions.
Calculate net payback, if saving is the goal
Suppose a $25 monitor helps you avoid 5 kWh per month, worth $0.90 at $0.18/kWh. If the monitor itself averages a hypothetical 1 W continuously, it uses 0.72 kWh in a 30-day month, costing about $0.13.
The modeled net saving is about $0.77 monthly, giving roughly 32 months of simple payback. These assumptions are illustrative; a monitor that reveals no actionable change has no energy-savings payback under this model.
Consider a simpler first step
An existing utility usage download or borrowed compatible meter may answer your question without another purchase. For a long-term controller, also consider reliability, privacy settings and what happens during connectivity loss. Avoid automatic power cuts that conflict with an appliance’s operating instructions. Keep the measurement result and the action it supported in your energy notes, so the device remains a useful tool rather than another unexplained always-on load.
