Name the actual operating state
“Not printing” can mean ready, sleep, a maintenance operation or another state. ENERGY STAR imaging-equipment guidance addresses energy performance across operating behavior, but a certification label is not a personalized annual bill.
Check the manual for sleep timers, network functions and shutdown instructions. Record whether the printer also serves as a scanner, fax or shared device. Those requirements influence which low-power routine is practical in your home office.
Estimate a low-power difference
Imagine one usable idle configuration averages 4 W and another 1 W during 160 hours of a week. The difference is 0.48 kWh weekly. Across 52 such weeks at $0.18/kWh, that is about $4.49 per year.
These are hypothetical values and exclude active printing and other hours. They illustrate why a few watts can accumulate while also showing that a replacement purchase may cost far more than the electricity difference.
Measure the complete routine
Record cumulative kWh over a week with normal print jobs and normal waiting time. Note page count, color use and unusual maintenance activity so you can explain an atypical period. A single instantaneous reading can miss wake-ups or cleaning cycles.
At low power, meter resolution and accuracy matter. If the instrument cannot reliably resolve the load, report an uncertainty or use credible model-specific documentation rather than claiming zero consumption.
Avoid a narrow purchase calculation
Before replacing a printer for energy reasons, include the price of the machine, consumables and the functions you need. For a working printer, adjusting a supported sleep timer may be enough. Follow its normal shutdown sequence instead of assuming that frequent hard power cuts are harmless or useful. Keep your weekly measurement as a baseline and revisit it only when your print volume, configuration or equipment changes materially.
