Read the heading beside the number

Microwave specifications can describe cooking output and electrical input separately. For example, GE’s archived JE1390WV listing identifies an 850-watt microwave/convection model while its specifications list a different electrical input. This discontinued model illustrates the distinction; it is not a buying recommendation.

Look for the exact label attached to each value in your own manual or specification sheet. Record the model and mode. A combination appliance can have microwave, convection and combined programs, so one figure may not describe every way it operates.

Calculate a short operating period

Suppose an invented microwave scenario draws a constant 1,500 W from the supply for ten minutes. Energy would be 1.5 × (10 ÷ 60) = 0.25 kWh. At $0.18/kWh, that costs $0.045, or 4.5 cents.

Repeating that session on 30 days would cost $1.35 before standby or other modes. These inputs are hypothetical and are not a test result for the GE example. If you substituted a cooking-output number for input power, the formula would still run but would answer the wrong energy question.

Treat power settings as operating behavior

A setting labeled 50% does not by itself provide a complete measured consumption profile for the appliance. Check how your model implements the setting and what input information its documentation provides. Do not infer an exact cost simply from the button label.

For a measured comparison, cover the full program and record its energy total. Include any preheating or combination-cooking stages that are part of the job. Use compatible measurement equipment only where allowed by the appliance and instrument instructions.

Keep recipe instructions and cost estimates separate

A recipe’s cooking-power guidance concerns preparation. This cost calculation is not a reason to alter its time or safety instructions. Compare appliances only when both complete the same food-preparation task appropriately.

If you already have a complete kWh reading, multiply it directly by your tariff; converting it back to a guessed wattage adds unnecessary uncertainty.
