Identify the exact machine design
“All-in-one” describes packaging, not one universal drying technology. Read the model documentation for washing and drying capacity, ventilation requirements, drain connections and maintenance. ENERGY STAR’s washer guidance includes combination designs, but that does not mean every combo has identical efficiency or installation needs.
In a rental, verify that the permitted connections and space suit the unit before comparing electricity. A machine that fits the floor area can still fail a clearance, access or connection requirement.
Check the boundary of each energy figure
A washer label and a separate dryer rating may use different standardized metrics. Do not add or compare numbers until you know whether they represent annual use, a particular cycle or an efficiency factor. Consult the accompanying explanation and compare like with like.
For a household estimate, use complete-session kWh where credible data is available. Include a second drying batch if the washed load exceeds the machine’s supported drying capacity.
Build a complete-load example
Suppose a combo uses an illustrative 1.40 kWh for a comparable wash-and-dry result. Separate equipment uses 0.20 kWh at the washer and 2.00 kWh at the dryer, with no separately supplied hot-water energy in this simplified example. The difference is 0.80 kWh per load.
At $0.18/kWh and 16 loads, the modeled saving is about $2.30 monthly. Purchase price, water, installation and maintenance remain outside that energy-only figure.
Evaluate the laundry queue
With separate appliances, one load can wash while another dries. A single combined drum may change how long a multi-load laundry day takes. Record complete turnaround time, usable capacity and how often you need consecutive loads. Those practical limits can matter more than a small modeled electricity difference. Keep convenience, space saved and energy cost in separate columns so that your final decision reflects the whole routine.
